Mid-Year Book Freak-Out Tag

Welcome one and all. 2020 has been quite the year and we’re only halfway through it. Well, now we’re a little more than halfway in. This tag was created by Chami and Ely Jayne. (Thank you Zezee for including that in yours).

I’ve read 18 books so far this year, which is actually quite a lot for me. My goal was 25 but it looks like I’ll be passing that sooner than I expected. So this year, I have some things to say about what I’ve read thus far.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2020.

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika and Maritza Moulite

As a Haitian-American, I don’t think I’ve ever related on such a personal level to a character the way I did with Alaine. I loved this reading experience.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020.

I’m more of a standalone gal so I actually haven’t read any sequels this year.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Not So Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles

I haven’t mentioned this one before but I saw it on Goodreads and the synopsis immediately peaked my interest.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Charming as a Verb by Ben Philippe

I literally found out about this book a week ago and I already can’t wait to get it in my hands. The author is Haitian so if you know me, that’s enough to know.

5. Biggest disappointment.

Color Me In by Natasha Diaz

I wanted to like this book so bad but it fell really flat for me. You can check out the full review here.

6. Biggest surprise.

The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

I read this for my Literature and Environment class and I was not expecting to love it just as much as I did.

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Candice Carty-Williams

Queenie surprised me. I had a feeling I’d like it but I wasn’t expecting to love it the way I did. I really loved the writing style of it.

8. Newest fictional crush.

Jack from Opposite of Always. It’s my current read and he is just so sweet. If a guy doesn’t look at me the way he looks at Kate, then I don’t want him.

9. Newest favorite character.

Isaiah Dunn from Isaiah Dunn is my Hero. I’m a sucker for characters that look out for others. I related to him in so many ways.

10. Book that made you cry.

It isn’t hard to make me cry but I’ll limit this to just one.

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

This book is so sad y’all. It deals with grief and pulled at every single one of my heart strings.

11. Book that made you happy.

Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds

I’m currently listening to the audiobook of Opposite of Always and the first two hours literally had me giggling. I need more cute romance in my life.

12. Favourite post I’ve written in 2020:

My favorite post in general is one I wrote for The Paradigm Press where I explained some of the Noname/J. Cole controversy and how it relates to celebrity culture. I really like how I styled it and I put a lot of time into writing and researching that article.

My favorite posts that I’ve written for this blog is my Book of the Month series and the Let’s Catch Up posts. Those are both things that are pretty distinct for me and I love making them.

13. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Why would you make me choose? I literally specialize in getting beautiful books. In truth, all my books are beautiful but, just to appease the masses, I’ll choose one.

Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D. Jackson

Y’all see this?! Enough said.

14. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Oh, so many. I’ve been pretty good when it comes to keeping up with my books of the month. I haven’t read the latest one just yet so I’ll have to get to that. Other than that, I’m a mood reader so this is a really tough question.
