Down the TBR Hole #14

I was honestly worried I wouldn’t get this out in time, I’m literally typing this up Sunday night. I usually make a day out of doing these but I’ve been swamped this past week.

I’ve had a lot on my plate with working on upcoming events for work, keeping up with scheduled readings for my classes, and trying to factor in a social life. Who ever said college was easy?

The Rules

  • 1. Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  •  2. Order on ascending date added.
  •  3. Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books.
  •  4. Read the synopsis of the books.
  •  5. Time to Decide: keep it or should it go
Kiss Me Kill Me by Lauren Henderson

Goodreads Synopsis: When 16-year-old Scarlett Wakefield transfers from St. Tabby’s to Wakefield Hall Collegiate, she is relieved that no one knows her dark, haunting secret. A few months ago, Scarlett was invited to an elite party with a guest list full of the hottest names in British society, including Dan McAndrew. Before the party, Scarlett had only imagined what it would be like to have her first kiss with Dan, but on the penthouse terrace, Dan leaned in close and she no longer had to wonder. Their kiss was beautiful and perfect and magical, and then . . . Dan McAndrew took his last breath as she held him in her arms. No one knows how or why Dan died, and everyone at St. Tabby’s believes Scarlett had something to do with it. But now that she’s safely hidden away at Wakefield Hall, Scarlett would rather forget that it ever happened. Only she can’t. Especially when she receives an anonymous note that will set her on the path to clearing her name and finding out what really happened to the first and last boy she kissed.

Once upon a time ago, I would have been all for this but looking at it now… I’m not interested and that’s okay.

Verdict: Unhaul

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Part 1 by Akira Himekawa

Goodreads Synopsis: In the mystical land of Hyrule, three spiritual stones hold the key to the Triforce, and whoever holds them will control the world! A boy named Link sets out on a quest to deliver the Emerald, the spiritual stone of the Forest, to Zelda, Princess of the land of Hyrule. The journey will be long and perilous, and Link will need all his skill and courage to defeat evil. The battle for Hyrule and the Sacred Realm has begun!

Turns out, it was a phase, Mom.

Verdict: Let it go

Jason & Kyra by Dana Davidson

Goodreads Synopsis: Jason is a basketball star and one of the most popular guys in school. Brainy Kyra isn’t, but she doesn’t much care what other people think. Under normal circumstances, Jason and Kyra would live in their separate worlds until graduation. But fate intervenes, and the unlikely duo is paired up for a class project. Although preconceived notions abound on both sides, Kyra soon realizes that Jason is not the dumb jock she anticipated. And Jason finds himself telling Kyra things he can’t even tell his best friend. As the two become close and eventually start to fall in love, no one in school can believe it, especially Jason’s ex-girlfriend, who is determined to get him back. Being together means navigating the obstacles that are coming their way-but staying apart may be impossible. Dana Davidson is a high school teacher who was the 2001 winner of the Newsweek WDIV Outstanding Teacher Award. This is her first book for young adults.

Now this sounds like my kind of book. Real issues with a side of romance and some light drama, let’s see what we can get out of it.

Verdict: Keep

The Land by Mildred D. Taylor

Goodreads Synopsis: The son of a prosperous landowner and a former slave, Paul-Edward Logan is unlike any other boy he knows. His white father has acknowledged him and raised him openly-something unusual in post-Civil War Georgia. But as he grows into a man he learns that life for someone like him is not easy. Black people distrust him because he looks white. White people discriminate against him when they learn of his black heritage. Even within his own family he faces betrayal and degradation. So at the age of fourteen, he sets out toward the only dream he has ever had: to find land every bit as good as his father’s, and make it his own. Once again inspired by her own history, Ms. Taylor brings truth and power to the newest addition to the award-winning Logan family stories.

I added this to my TBR in early 2014, which seems strange to me because this is exactly the type of book I loved in elementary school. I didn’t realize I was still into these books in 8th grade. It sounds good, but I doubt I’d read it today. I could see myself getting this for my little cousins though.

Verdict: Leave it in 2014

Messed Up by Janet Nichols Lynch

Goodreads Synopsis: A fifteen-year-old Mexican American has experienced a series of tough breaks before finding himself completely on his own. He decides to try to keep his lack of a home a secret from his school while working hard and staying out of trouble.

The synopsis is kind of light but this book was published in 2009, things were different back then. I read a few of the Goodreads reviews and it looks pretty well loved so I think I’ll hold on to it.

Verdict: Keep

I let go of three books and kept two on the TBR. That almost makes up for last week’s lack of unhauling.

Have you read any of these books?

  1. I haven’t read any of these, but I your reasoning why you kept or let go of them totally made sense to me. Sometimes we are in certain phases or our tastes change and that’s okay. Good on you for sorting out your list 😉
