American Born Chinese (Book Review)

American Born Chinese molds three seemingly separate stories into a collection of perfect balance, though the events are quite chaotic.

The story of the Monkey King, a popular Chinese fable, follows him in his power struggle in hopes of becoming a god.

Jin Wang has just moved to a new school where he is the only Chinese-American student. Jin is just trying to be accepted and make friends. He wants to be a normal kid but he quickly becomes the target of bullies.

Danny’s cousin Chin-Kee is ruining his life one year at a time. The visits of Danny’s stereotypical Chinese cousin have been causing him misery that won’t seem to end.

All in all, I loved the way in which Gene Luen Yang combined the three stories. The imagery went very well with the story. It was an absolutely wonderful graphic novel and a super quick read.
